Volleyball Edged in Five-Set Thriller
Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team fought off three match points in the fourth set and forced a fifth and deciding set against the host Bullis School, but the Bulldogs won the final set, 15-7, to edge the Blue Storm by a 3-2 count October 2 in Potomac, MD.
The Bullis victory came by a linescore of 25-13, 12-25, 25-15, 27-29, 15-7.
After a tough first set, the Storm greatly improved its passing and served well to pull even, with a number of hustle plays and great digs by Rachel Hull ’23, Natalie Kochova ’22, and Eliana Sandy ’24. The third and fourth sets were back and forth, and featured key passing from Ava Brody ’22, several good plays by Finn Sipes ’22, and strong blocks and play at the net from Riley Schermerhorn ’22. Hull served an ace for the winning point in the fourth set.
Mercersburg led 4-0 and 7-5 in the fifth and final set, but lost focus and struggled to receive serves. "We fought hard, but did not get justice for our efforts," said Blue Storm coach Erin Caretti.
Sipes had six kills, Schermerhorn had seven total blocks and three kills, Hull had four kills and three digs, and Nicole Treml ’22 had five aces.
The Storm (5-5) visits local rival St. James Tuesday, October 5, at 5 p.m.
