V Volleyball Wins on Senior Night

Thursday, October 21, 2021

Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team honored its five seniors in fine fashion October 21 with a 3–0 win over visiting Fannett-Metal in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium. The victory came by a linescore of 25–9, 25–20, 25–22.

Ava Brody ’22, Natalie Kochova ’22, Riley Schermerhorn ’22, Finn Sipes ’22, and Nicole Treml ’22 make up the Blue Storm’s senior class, and all five contributed to the win.

The Storm rolled through the first set with an easy win.  Schermerhorn, Kochova, and Morgan Fisher ’23 led a strong attack.  "Finn did a great job being the floor general and had many great plays and sets," said Mercersburg interim head coach Erin Caretti. "Ava was an anchor on the back row and a passing/digging machine, and Nicole played a solid all around first set."

The dominance continued to start the second set.  Schermerhorn had five kills and three blocks; Fannett-Metal had no answer for her throughout the match. Though the score ended up close, the set was never in doubt.  The third set featured the starters setting the tone once again.  Gradually the bench was incorporated into the game, with Priscilla Lee ’23 getting some solid sets in the third. "Finn was the first senior to be substituted, as we wanted her to get a proper send-off as a four-year letterwinner." Caretti said. Once again Fannett-Metal scrapped hard and took the lead late, but Fisher and Brody reentered the game on the back row and made some great passes and serve receives to complete the straight-set win.

Schermerhorn finished with 13 kills and four blocks. Sipes had 18 assists, four aces, two kills, and two blocks. Kochova tallied eight kills, 13 digs, and two aces. Brody contributed 14 digs and an ace, and Treml posted eight digs, two blocks, two assists, and a kill. Rachel Hull ’23 chipped in a team-high 20 digs.

Mercersburg (10-7) faces Bishop Walsh in the first round of the IPSL playoffs Wednesday, October 27. The winner advances to the championship match October 30 against the survivor of St. James and St. Maria Goretti.
