V Volleyball Wins IPSL Cup Series
Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team defeated local rival St. James by a 3–1 count in the Independent-Parochial School League Cup Series championship match October 30 in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium. The Blue Storm won by a linescore of 25–20, 26–28, 25–15, 25–22.
"Priscilla Lee ’23 stepped into the setter position after playing a reserve role for most of the season, and did a great job," said Mercersburg interim head coach Erin Caretti. "The team really pulled together, played inspired volleyball, and picked each other up again and again."
Morgan Fisher ’23 posted a team-high 12 kills, added three aces, and was one of three players to tie for the team lead with 17 digs (along with Ava Brody ’22 and Natalie Kochova ’22). Lee had 21 assists, 15 digs, and two aces. Riley Schermerhorn ’22 tallied 11 kills and two blocks. Hull added six kills and three aces, and had a clutch serving run in the fourth set to help seal the victory. Nicole Treml ’22 chipped in nine digs and an ace, and Kochova provided six kills and five aces to go along with her 17 digs.
"Reserve players Eliana Sandy ’24, Emily Jiang ’24, Sonia Piontkovska ’24, and Charlotte d’Arabian ’24 were a huge part of this successful season, as they pushed the team in practice and were supportive and ready to go during the games," added Caretti. "Manny Ponce ’23 also did a great job as the team student assistant."
The Blue Storm had advanced to the finals by beating Bishop Walsh, while St. James defeated crosstown foe St. Maria Goretti in the other semifinal.
Mercersburg finishes the 2021 slate with an 11–7 record.
