V Volleyball Sweeps McConnellsburg
Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team stormed out of the gates en route to a 3-0 victory October 12 over cross-mountain foe McConnellsburg, 25–10, 26–24, 25–18, in a match played in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium.
The first set featured solid hitting by Morgan Fisher ’23 and effective serving throughout the lineup with Fisher, Nicole Treml ’22, Rachel Hull ’23, and Finn Sipes ’22 all recording aces. The second set was a closer affair, but Mercersburg led throughout and the bench contributed more with Priscilla Lee ’23 getting some setting experience, Abby Hann ’23 playing middle, and Eliana Sandy ’24 getting some time at outside hitter. Hitting was strong throughout the lineup, led by Sipes and Riley Schermerhorn ’22.
A number of players got good experience off the bench in the third set, anchored by the contributions of seniors Schermerhorn and Natalie Kochova ’22 (who had three kills in the final set).
“Sonia Piontkovska ’24 and Charlotte d’Arabian ’24 had some solid passes, Emily Jiang ’24 had a big hit and some nice passes, and Abby also had some nice plays at the net,” said Mercersburg interim head coach Erin Caretti. “This young and inexperienced group mostly led throughout and pulled out a close victory. I was very proud of the team's energy and effort to get the win.”
Kochova posted a team-high nine kills, Hull, Sipes, and Ava Brody ’22 tallied 13 digs apiece, and Hann contributed two solo blocks.
Mercersburg (8–6) visits Mid-Atlantic Prep League foe Blair Academy Saturday, October 16, in Blairstown, N.J. (1:30 p.m.).
