V Volleyball Outlasts St. James
Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team stormed out to a 2-0 lead and held on for an exciting and competitive 3-2 win over local rival and host St. James October 5 in Hagerstown, MD.
The Blue Storm emerged victorious by a linescore of 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 15-13.
Riley Schermerhorn ’22 finished the match with back-to-back blocks in the winner-take-all fifth set.
"This was a huge road win that showed lots of character by the team," said Mercersburg interim head coach Erin Caretti. "We got huge passing and digging games by Ava Brody ’22 [24 digs] and Rachel Hull ’23 [17 digs] throughout. Priscilla Lee ’23, Emily Jiang ’24, and Eliana Sandy ’24 all made key contributions off the bench."
Morgan Fisher ’23 led the way offensively with 11 kills; she also had seven digs and three aces. Sipes had 17 assists and 14 digs to go with six kills. Schermerhorn collected seven kills to go with her five total blocks. Natalie Kochova ’22 posted 15 digs and six kills.
Mercersburg (6-5) looks forward to a pair of home matches on Family Weekend, with Bishop Walsh arriving for a contest Friday, October 8, at 5 p.m., followed by a clash with Mid-Atlantic Prep League foe Lawrenceville Saturday, October 9, at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place in the Plantz Courts.
