V Volleyball Nips Bishop Walsh
In its third straight five-set match, Mercersburg’s varsity volleyball team outlasted visiting Bishop Walsh High School October 8 in the Plantz Courts. The Blue Storm prevailed by a linescore of 25-12, 23-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-7.
After dominating the first set, Mercersburg looked primed to coast to victory; however, the visitors from Cumberland, MD, fought back to take the second set. The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with Mercersburg coming out on top again. With a chance to close it out, the Storm struggled to find its rhythm and lost the fourth set. Following the exchange of a couple points to start the fifth set, the mojo reappeared for the Storm. Natalie Kochova ’22 finished the fifth with a great serving run.
“Our captains, Finn Sipes ’22 and Ava Brody ’22, provided solid leadership, keeping the team from faltering and then stepping up in the fifth set,” said Mercersburg interim head coach Erin Caretti. “Riley Schemerhorn ’22 was big on the net in the first and the fifth. Rachel Hull ’23 played a consistent and strong game in each match, and passed and attacked well with a bunch of good hustle plays. Eliana Sandy ’24, Abby Hann ’23, Emily Jiang ’24, and Priscilla Lee ’23 all added key contributions off the bench. It was a great team win!”
Schermerhorn and Morgan Fisher ’23 had 12 kills apiece, and Schermerhorn added five blocks. Brody had 27 digs and Hull added 19 digs to lead the defensive effort. Hull also had eight kills. Sipes collected 25 assists.
Mercersburg (7–5 overall) hosts Lawrenceville Saturday, October 9, in a match that begins at noon.
