V Baseball Stymied by Goretti Rally
Visiting St. Maria Goretti rallied for nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and stun Mercersburg, 11-9, in varsity baseball action March 30 at Cannon Field.
Mercersburg increased what was a 5-2 lead to 9-2 with three runs in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth. But the Gaels dug deep and scored eight of their nine runs with two outs in the decisive seventh inning. The Blue Storm didn't help its cause by issuing four walks and committing two errors in the inning.
Mercersburg out-hit Goretti by a 10-5 count. Aiden Lorson ’22 had three hits and three RBI, Gavin Williams ’24 collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Austin Hallberg ’22 added two RBI.
Tommy Tereschuk ’22 started the game on the mound for the Storm and cruised through three innings of work, allowing an earned run and no hits while striking out six. Unfortunately, the bullpen was tagged for 10 runs and yielded six walks in four innings of relief. Goretti's Ty Hames was the winning pitcher, while Lorson took the loss in relief without allowing an earned run. Mercersburg committed five errors in the field.
The Storm (2-3 overall) looks to get back on track when it hosts a doubleheader against MAPL foe Blair Academy Saturday, April 2, beginning at 1 p.m.
