V Baseball Now 6–0 After Sweep of VES
Mercersburg’s varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader for the third time in three weekends this season, and is now 6–0 following 10–9 and 15–9 wins at Virginia Episcopal School May 1 in Lynchburg, VA.
The Blue Storm scored five times in the 3rd inning of the opener to take what appeared to be a commanding 8–3 lead, but the host Bishops clawed back and took a 9–8 advantage in the bottom of the 5th. Evan Howley ’22 singled home Julian Trilling ’21 with the tying run, and Kade Venkatesan '21 had the game-winning RBI when his groundout scored Aiden Lorson ’22.
Jad Hassoun ’21 was the winning pitcher after tossing 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Starting pitcher Owen Beisty ’21 struck out 10; Beisty has recorded double-digit strikeouts in all three of his starts in a Mercersburg uniform. Howley and Venkatesan each had two hits and two RBI.
Mercersburg used another big inning in the second game to seize control, plating seven runs in the 4th inning. Howley and Venkatesan both went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Austin Hallberg ’22 and Gavin Williams ’24 each collected a pair of hits for the Storm. Jake Ahlgren ’21 was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
The Blue Storm will see the same opponent in its next twin-bill May 8, when the Bishops come to Mercersburg for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
