Members of Mercersburg Academy’s Jazz Band, Octet and Magalia (the school’s a cappella vocal groups), and the Chorale took the stage for the Fall Pops Concert November 13 in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre.

The Jazz Band, directed by faculty member Bryan Morgan ’07, performed selections including “Georgia on My Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael, arranged by Mark Taylor; “One Night Samba” by Antonia Carlos Jobim, arranged by Paul Murtha; and “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars, arranged by Murtha.

The Jazz Band joined with the Mercersburg Chorale for a performance of “Time Warp” by Richard O’Brien, arranged by Andy Beck.

Magalia, directed by faculty member Jim Brinson, performed songs including “Killing Me Softly” by Charles Fox, arranged by Deke Sharon, and “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” by Alan Menken, arranged by Brinson.

The Octet, also directed by Brinson, sang the traditional “Good Ol’ Acapella” and “Some Nights” by Andrew Dost, arranged by faculty emeritus Richard Rotz.

The members of Magalia and Octet joined together as the Magtet to perform “Mr. Blue Sky” by Jeff Lynne, arranged by Sharon. Both groups worked steadily not only to prepare the music, but also to learn new ways to work together under a single director.

Just prior to the Fall Pops Concert, Mercersburg’s String Ensemble performed during the school meeting November 12, and the following day, the Fall Student Music Recital took place November 14 in the Simon Theatre. To see more upcoming events, visit this page of the school’s website.
