Student Choreography Takes the Stage at Winter Student Dance Showcase
Mercersburg will celebrate the 12th annual Winter Student Dance Showcase Saturday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre.
The performance is a great opportunity to appreciate student work and will be open to all. Visitors to campus must comply with Mercersburg’s visitor policy.
The entire showcase is choreographed by and for students, who have been working on these performances since early January. This year’s showcase will feature choreography from more than a dozen dancers, including Joie Xiao ’22, Destiny Rodney ’22, Molly Willis ’22, Alex Gound ’22, Natalie Kochova ’22, Steven Yang ’23, Cricket Tatone ’24, Eva Speck-Ewer ’24, Kalwa Tembo ’23, Olivia Short ’23, Catherine Orders ’23, Elizabeth Orders ’25, Maggie Coors ’25, Stella Johnson ’25, and Blanca Mendiola Bringas ’24.
Denise Dalton, director of dance, describes the Winter Student Dance Showcase as “an informal, less intimidating atmosphere for the less experienced so they might have the confidence to take a risk at choreographing. I saw the need for a performance that featured only student-choreographed work because dancers were becoming more and more prolific at composition.”
The showcase began in 2011, and this year’s production marks the return of the performance to the stage following the COVID-19 pandemic. The showcase initially grew out of a need to share the abundance of talent in Mercersburg’s dance program.
