State Champs to be Crowned On Campus February 18–19
Mercersburg athletic teams are hosting a pair of Pennsylvania state championship events February 18–19 on campus.
The Pennsylvania Independent School Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT) will be held in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium beginning Friday, February 18, at 4:30 p.m. Action continues Saturday, February 19, at 9 a.m., with championship finals scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The event features athletes from 17 schools across Pennsylvania (and northeast Ohio).
The Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships kick off Saturday at noon in the Hale Field House. Nine schools are sending competitors to the event.
Spectators are permitted for both events. Admission to the wrestling tournament is $8 per day for adults and $5 for children; Mercersburg students and employees receive free admission with their Blue Card. There is no admission charge for the track & field championships.
Spectators must comply with Mercersburg’s Visitor Policy at all times, and are required to present one of the following for admission: A) proof of COVID-19 vaccination, B) a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival on campus, or C) proof of COVID infection within the past 90 days.
The top six PAISWT place winners in each weight class qualify for the National Prep Wrestling Championships, which will be held February 25–26 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. Among the Mercersburg wrestlers to watch are 2020 National Prep qualifier Alex Forrester ’23 (who enters with a record of 23-7 at 132 pounds), Hayden Shirk ’24 (31–7, 145 pounds), Holden Walker ’23 (19–8, 170 pounds), and Luke Hendricks ’24 (25–8, 285 pounds).
The PAISAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will crown victors from across the state. Mercersburg athletes to watch include school-record holders Hannah King ’23 (girls’ high jump) and Anne Sehon ’25 (girls’ 800m), as well as Thomas Burkhardt ’22 (boys’ shot put) and Mick Lorenger ’22 (boys’ 1600m/3200m).
