Students perform in the Fall Dance Concert.

Mercersburg Academy’s dance program hosted its Spring Dance Concert on May 14 in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre.

The concert included a range of genres, including ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary, tap, Irish step, steppin’, and hip-hop. Thirty-two students from curricular and cocurricular programs performed two dozen dances, including solo and group numbers, on the stage of the Simon Theatre.

“It’s always a variety,” says arts faculty member Denise Dalton, Mercersburg’s director of dance. “Our concerts showcase all the different styles the students have been studying throughout the school year.”

Choreographing the concert is a collective effort by Dalton, adjunct instructors who work with the students on a weekly basis, and guest artists who have visited campus this spring term, including Class of 2013 alum Jennifer Nelson. Choreography by current seniors Alex Gound, Bube Osaji, Destiny Rodney, Matthew Tavarez, Molly Willis, Paula Ante Wright, and Joie Xiao was featured.

In addition to new material, several selections from the school’s Fall Dance Concert and Winter Dance Showcase were reprised.

Mercersburg’s dance program includes a dance PGA (Performance Group Activity) that meets each afternoon, as well as several dance classes offered as part of the arts curriculum.
