Softball Taken Out by Bishop Walsh
Visiting Bishop Walsh High School smacked six consecutive hits to start the game en route to a five-run 1st inning and defeated Mercersburg, 21-9, in softball action May 12 at Spider Field.
The Spartans led 5-0 after the 1st inning and took advantage of some shaky Blue Storm defense in the 2nd and 3rd innings to score eight more runs (five of which were unearned, due to six Mercersburg errors). The Storm came back with two runs in the 3rd, four runs in the 4th, and a single run in the 5th to get within 13-7 before the Spartans pushed across four runs in each of their final two at-bats.
Bishop Walsh outhit the Storm, 11-8, but did not have a hit between the 1st and 6th innings. In a scheduling quirk due to rainouts and postponements, each of the Storm’s last two games have been against the Spartans. (Bishop Walsh defeated Mercersburg, 7-4, back on May 3 in Cumberland, MD.)
“On a positive note, we fought back in each inning after the first three,” said Mercersburg head coach Lauren Jacobs. “The team kept the energy up. We had some good moments but we still haven’t been able to put a complete game together.
Kayleigh Linn ’22 took the loss in the circle for Mercersburg, but had a strong game offensively, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Catherine Shaffer ’22 was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles; she also scored twice and drove in two runs.
Mercersburg (6-12) is scheduled to finish the regular season at home Saturday, May 14, with a doubleheader against Friends Select School of Philadelphia. First pitch of the twin-bill is at noon.
