Softball Shut Down by St. James
St. James pitcher Lily Schlotterbeck pitched a gem, striking out 17 and allowing just one hit—a solo home run by Catherine Shaffer ’22 in the 7th inning—to lead the visiting Saints to a 3-1 win over Mercersburg in softball action April 14 at Spider Field.
Offensively, the Blue Storm managed only a 2nd inning walk by Izzy Jones ’22 and Shaffer’s homer. St. James scored single runs in the 1st, 6th, and 7th innings to snap the Storm’s four-game win streak.
"We played a pretty tight game, but we just couldn't generate anything on offense," said Mercersburg head coach Lauren Jacobs.
Shaffer threw out a St. James runner at the plate from centerfield in the 6th to keep the deficit at 2-0, and then was responsible for the Storm's only run of the game in the final frame, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep the win streak alive.
Quin Caretti ’24 tossed a solid game for Mercersburg, allowing two earned runs and four hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.
Mercersburg (6-5) visits Friends School of Baltimore for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch Tuesday, April 19.
