Mercersburg’s softball team dropped a 7–4 midweek contest at Bishop Walsh High School May 4 in Cumberland, MD.

The Blue Storm fell behind 4–0 in the 1st inning but got within 4–2 in the top of the 3rd on a two-run single by Izzy Jones ’22 that scored Cate Vickery ’22 and Catherine Shaffer ’22. After the host Spartans added a run in the bottom of the inning, Mercersburg scored two more times in the 4th; Vickery and Shaffer came around to score again with Jones at the plate when a Bishop Walsh outfielder misplayed a ball, pulling the Storm within 5–4.

The Spartans added single runs in the 4th and 5th innings for the eventual 7–4 margin.

Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a double, and Ellie Williams ’22 reached base three separate times after being hit by pitches; the Blue Storm had at least one baserunner in every inning.

On a more sour note, the Storm committed five errors; three of the seven runs allowed by Mercersburg pitcher Quin Caretti ’24 were unearned. Caretti scattered six hits in five innings of work, striking out three.

“We competed, but we gave them some runs on errors, which obviously isn’t giving us the best chance to win,” said Mercersburg head coach Lauren Jacobs. “We’re in a bit of a slump, but we did compete and we battled. We just made too many mistakes against a solid team that can capitalize on those mistakes.”

The Storm (6-11) hosts Madeira in the annual M Cup clash Friday, May 6, at 4:30 p.m. at Spider Field.
