Six Event Winners Lead Way at Winter Storm Indoor Track & Field Invitational
A total of six Mercersburg student athletes (three girls, three boys) won individual events—including a new school record set by Hannah King ’23 in the girls’ high jump—when the Blue Storm hosted the Winter Storm Indoor Track & Field Invitational February 7 in the Hale Field House.
King’s first-place effort in the high jump 5’ 0” broke the school record previously set by Sarah Kolanowski ’10 (4’ 11”), which had stood for a decade. Arola Oluwehinmi ’21 won the 60m dash in a time of 8.21 seconds; her time ranks second on the all-time Mercersburg rankings for that event. Annie Leder ’20 won the long jump with a jump of 15’ 11.5”, her best ever in the event and the third-best jump in school history.
Leder and Elizabeth Flaherty ’21 took second and third, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Leder’s time of 9.96 second ranks third on the all-time Mercersburg list, and Flaherty’s time (10.47) is good for fifth. Oluwehinmi placed fifth in the long jump (15’ 0.5”).
James Colwell ’20 won the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.64 seconds. In the preliminaries, Colwell ran 8.63 seconds, lowering his own indoor school record of 9.1 seconds that he set a year ago. Foday Bangura ’22 won the triple jump with a jump of 42’ 10.25”, his best ever indoors. His jump ranks No. 2 in the all-time Mercersburg rankings. Prithvi Kota ’22 won the high jump at 5’ 10”, his best-ever jump in the event and tying him for second on the all-time Mercersburg list.
Colwell showed his versatility, taking fifth in the long jump in his first-ever attempt at the event. His jump of 19’ 5” ranks 10th on the all-time school list; he also placed seventh in the 200m (24.51). Peter Polega ’20 placed second in the long jump at 20’ 5.5” (fifth on the school’s all-time list.
Berklee Cohen ’20 took fifth in the 400m in a time of 53.88 seconds, his best-ever in the event and good for fifth on the all-time school list. Sean Fiscus ’20 placed third in the 800m in a time of 2:07.75, his best-ever indoors in the event and good for sixth in the all-time Mercersburg rankings. Pablo Garza Gutierrez ’22 placed seventh in the 800m in a time of 2:13.84, his best-ever in the event. Aakash Koduru ’20 placed third in the mile in a time of 4:47.32. Cohen, Fiscus, Garza Gutierrez, and Koduru teamed up in the final event of the meet, the 4x400m relay, which placed second in a time of 3:45.55 (the No. 4 relay time on the all-time Mercersburg indoor track & field rankings for that event).
Mercersburg now prepares for the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Prep League Indoor Championships, which are set for Saturday, February 15, beginning at noon in Lawrenceville, NJ.
