Bridget Ahlgren ’22/Foday Bangura ’22

Mercersburg seniors Bridget Ahlgren ’22 and Foday Bangura ’22 signed national letters of intent November 10 (National Signing Day) to continue their athletic careers at the NCAA Division I level. Ahlgren is headed to Campbell University to play lacrosse, while Bangura has signed to play soccer at Villanova University.

Ahlgren, of Mercersburg, PA, is a four-year varsity lacrosse and field hockey player (and a team captain in field hockey). She has also competed on Mercersburg’s indoor track & field and junior-varsity basketball teams. In five games during the abbreviated spring 2021 lacrosse season, Ahlgren led the Blue Storm with 22 goals in five games, and was also tops on the team in draw controls and caused turnovers.

Ahlgren is a midfielder who played club lacrosse for the Renegades Lacrosse Club and Maryland Select. Ahlgren has been coached in varsity and club lacrosse (and for two seasons in field hockey) by her mother, Mercersburg faculty member Kristin Ahlgren. (Fellow faculty member Doonie Brewer coached Ahlgren in field hockey for two years.) Ahlgren’s older sister, Jill ’19, plays field hockey and lacrosse at Gettysburg College.

Bangura, of Greencastle, PA, is a two-year team captain and a four-year varsity soccer starter. He is a defender/midfielder who plays club soccer for Baltimore Armour; he previously played for the D.C. United Academy. Bangura played at Mercersburg his first two years under then-head coach Carl Stensland (who is now head coach at Avon Old Farms in Connecticut) and his final two years for current Mercersburg head coach Peter Kallin.

Bangura has also starred for Mercersburg’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams as a sprinter and jumper.

Campbell is located in Buies Creek, NC, and is a member of the Big South Conference; Villanova is in the Philadelphia suburbs and competes in boys’ soccer as a member of the Big East Conference

Last spring, 20 members of Mercersburg’s Class of 2021 announced plans to continue their athletic careers at the college level. Their college destinations included Air Force, Army, Navy, Swarthmore College, Davidson College, Vassar College, and the University of New Hampshire.
