Shorthanded Boys’ Swimmers/ Divers Fall to La Salle
Competing with a smaller roster, Mercersburg’s boys’ swimming and diving team dropped a dual meet to PIAA powerhouse La Salle College High School, 116–70, on January 28 in the Lloyd Aquatic Center’s Furnary Pool.
PIAA rules prohibit member schools like La Salle from competing against postgraduate students, so Mercersburg had a smaller pool of competitors to draw from against the visiting Explorers (from Wyndmoor, PA, near Philadelphia). La Salle has won five PIAA Championships in the past 10 years and finished last year ranked No. 5 in the nation.
Event winners for Mercersburg included:
200-yard individual medley: Teddy Blake ’23, 1:55.74
50 freestyle: Peem Pibuldham ’22, 21.17
1-meter diving: Pete Curtis ’22, 201.70
500 free: Blake, 4:39.17
The Mercersburg girls were originally scheduled to face off against Madeira School in a dual meet to be part of the yearlong M Cup competition between the schools, but the Snails were unable to make the trip from Northern Virginia due to inclement weather. So the Storm girls competed in an intrasquad meet.
Event winners on the girls’ side included:
200 free: Ava Harrington ’24, 1:55.73
200 IM: Maddie Koutavas ’22, 2:14.20
50 free: Alexis Coates ’24, 25.18
1-meter diving: Clare Ip ’23, 138.35
100 butterfly: Jade Matthias ’22, 58.13
100 free: Jojo Duerden ’23, 56.62
500 free: Crystal Yuen ’24, 5:17.64
100 backstroke: Matthias, 57.66
100 breaststroke: Koutavas, 1:06.94
Both Mercersburg squads compete at the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Invitational Saturday, February 5, at Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ (1 p.m.).
