Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team fought the powerful visitors from Blair Academy and trailed by just a single point in the second half before the Buccaneers exploded for 49 points in the final stanza to defeat the Blue Storm, 82–54, in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League contest February 3 in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium.

Bryson Brown ’24 scored 13 of the Storm’s first 17 points, including a three pointer which tied the game at 17–17 with eight minutes left in the first half. Blair led 33–29 at halftime, and Mercersburg pulled within 38–37 until the Blair duo of Joe Carroll (26 points, including 17 in the second half) and Brady Muller (24 points) took over.

Blair has two of the top 10-ranked recruits in the state of New Jersey according to 247Sports, including Tega Oweh, a senior who has committed to Oklahoma and is the No. 2 recruit in the state. (He is also the younger brother of former Mercersburg standout Irefeke Kaylen Oweh ’20—now playing at Penn State—and Baltimore Ravens defensive end Odafe Oweh, who played football in State College.) The Mercersburg defense and foul trouble held Oweh to five points.

Speaking of foul issues, the Storm’s Collin Metcalf ’22 fouled out with five points and teammate Darren Blocker ’22 battled foul trouble but contributed 14 points. Brown led Mercersburg with 18 points, and Chris Watson ’22 chipped in 13 points.

Mercersburg (4–9, 0–2 MAPL) has a busy weekend, hosting Bullis Saturday, February 5, at 3 p.m. before traveling to the Lehigh Valley Showcase to face Perkiomen Sunday, February 6, at 1:30 p.m. at Parkland High School in Allentown, PA.
