Rivalry Competitions Underway with Kiski, Madeira

Friday, September 24, 2021

Mercersburg’s boys’ and girls’ athletic teams kicked off their annual multisport rivalry competitions September 25 with the Kiski School (for boys) and Madeira School (for girls). After the fall season of competition, the Blue Storm holds a 15–6 lead over the Madeira Snails (of McLean, VA), while the Storm and the Kiski Cougars (of Saltsburg, PA) are tied 2–2.

The Centennial Cup between Mercersburg and Kiski (which is located about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh) was first awarded in 2012–2013 to celebrate 100 years of competition between the schools. The M Cup series between the Storm and Madeira (just outside Washington, DC) premiered in 2018–2019.

Mercersburg holds a 5–2–1 overall lead in the Centennial Cup series with Kiski, and has won the last four. The Blue Storm has claimed the M Cup in both years that it has been awarded (2018–2019 and 2019–2020).

On September 25, Mercersburg’s boys’ cross country and golf teams defeated Kiski, while the boys’ soccer team fell to the Cougars. Kiski also receives a point for football, which is no longer contested between the teams (Mercersburg’s football team plays the 8-man version of the game, while Kiski, an all-boys’ school, sponsors the traditional 11-player version).

The same day, Storm squads in girls’ varsity soccer, tennis, and field hockey, as well as junior-varsity tennis, defeated Madeira, while the varsity and JV volleyball squads dropped their contests. The Storm and Snails tied in girls’ JV soccer. (Two weeks later, the schools’ girls’ cross country teams faced off, with Mercersburg earning a victory.)

The Centennial Cup awards a point for each victory, while the M Cup awards three points for a varsity win, two points for a JV win, and one point for a tie.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, neither of the Cups was awarded during the 2020–2021 academic year; however, Mercersburg and Kiski did compete in spring 2021 in baseball, lacrosse, and tennis. Mercersburg won all three baseball contests and the tennis match, while Kiski claimed a victory in lacrosse.

The teams will meet again in a number of sports during the winter and spring seasons. Updates and results will be available at twitter.com/MburgAthletics.
