John David Bennett leads a session during the last in-person
Summer Institute in 2019.

Mercersburg’s Summer Institute, set for August 15-19, will bring educators together in person with leading thinkers about the future of education. The five-day institute will include keynotes and workshops delivered or facilitated by Mercersburg faculty and guest presenters. Registration is now open.

“We’ve always enjoyed the Summer Institute and its impact for years, but this one feels especially significant because we’ll be together in person again and we’re guided by a new North Star: Meaning and Mastery,” says John David Bennett P ’12, ’19, ’24, Mercersburg’s dean of curricular innovation. “We’ll talk theory, but with the North Star in place, our purpose will be to turn theory into immediate practice.”

Bennett, along with Jennifer Smith ’97, P ’23, ’24 (Mercersburg’s dean of academics), will set the stage on August 15 for the discussions to come with a day themed around “Retrofitting School: The Principles of Design.”

On August 16, invited speakers Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang and Dr. Christina Kundrak will focus on “Meaning and Mastery.” Immordino-Yang is a professor of education, psychology and neuroscience at the University of Southern California, the Fahmy Attallah Professor of Humanistic Psychology, and director of the USC Center for Affective Neuroscience, Development, Learning and Education. Kundrak received a Ph.D. in urban education policy from USC’s Rossier School of Education.

Dr. Pooja Agarwal, a cognitive scientist who has conducted research on how students learn since 2005, will lead Institute attendees in two days of exploration around “The Tools of Learning and Mastery” August 17 and 18.

On August 19, Bennett and Smith will return to help attendees wrap up the ideas of the week with a day focused on “Transfer: Answers for “How?”
