Pethel Fires Low Round at Keystone Cup
Mercersburg’s Josh Pethel ’22 carded a 78 to earn individual medalist honors, and Argyle Downes ’23 was just one shot behind with a 79, but the Hill School’s depth enabled the Blues to edge out the Blue Storm in the three-team Keystone Cup, which was played October 31 at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown, PA.
Hill recorded a 409, with Mercersburg checking in at 417 and Kiski at 427. The event was played from the blue tees with the lowest five of six scores considered in determining a winner. The shotgun start featured one player from each school teeing off in threesomes.
Pethel’s 78 led the way, with Downes joined by Hill’s Lucas Steinmetz and Nick Rafetto one shot back at 79. The Keystone Cup is played on an annual basis; it focuses on camaraderie and sportsmanship and all the teams enjoy a meal together after the match.
The fall finale of Mercersburg’s season is the PAISSA State Championship Monday, November 1, at Glen Mills Golf Club in Glen Mills, PA. This year’s event features 11 four-man teams and 16 individuals.
