Perkiomen Edges Football in Regular-Season Finale
Perkiomen School scored twice in the fourth quarter to overcome a 10-point deficit and defeat Mercersburg, 34-30, in a battle of the Keystone State Football League's top two teams in the regular season finale October 22 in Pennsburg, PA.
Mercersburg (5-1) took the lead in the first quarter when Louis Concordia ’22 recovered a fumble on the host Panthers’ 28-yard line to set the Blue Storm up for a short scoring drive. Quarterback Tommy Quick ’22 scored from 4 yards out and Concordia bulled in for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 in favor of the Blue Storm.
The rest of the contest was a see-saw affair, as the teams traded leads. Perkiomen (5-1) converted two Mercersburg turnovers into scores in the fourth quarter, the last with less than two minutes remaining, to win the contest.
Quick and Concordia accounted for all four of Mercersburg’s touchdowns against the Panthers, who avenged a loss to the Blue Storm from earlier this season.
"We did a lot of good things today," said Mercersburg head coach Andy Brown. "We also made some mistakes that, against a good team, are going to be costly. We’re going to reset ourselves and get ready for the playoffs."
The four-team KSFL playoffs start next weekend, with No. 2 seed Mercersburg hosting a semifinal contest Saturday, October 30, against Valley Forge Military Academy (kickoff is at noon). Perkiomen secured the top seed in the playoffs on the league tiebreaker, which is the fewest points allowed during the regular season. The Panthers will face Delaware County Christian School in the other semifinal
The league championship game will take place Saturday, November 6, on the home field of the highest-remaining seed.
