Mercersburg Hosting Franklin-Fulton County Band Festival January 11-12
Approximately 220 student musicians from Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania rehearsed and performed at Mercersburg Academy as part of the Franklin-Fulton County Band Festival on Friday and Saturday, January 11-12. This was the first time since 2007 that Mercersburg has hosted the event, which rotates between Franklin-Fulton County Music Educators Association member schools.
Among the participants were eight members of the Mercersburg student body: Julian Bown ’19 (Alexandria, Va.), Sean Fiscus ’20 (LaVale, Md.), Dalton Fitzsimmons ’20 (Williamsport, Md.), Kenny Hong ’21 (Tianjin, China), Shirley Lee ’20 (Seoul, South Korea), Shoki Nemoto ’21 (Tokyo, Japan), Molly Willis ’22 (Mercersburg, Pa.), and Aaron Zheng ’19 (Shanghai, China).
Student musicians rehearsed in the Burgin Center for the Arts and gave a concert on Saturday, January 12, at 1:30 p.m. in the Simon Theatre.
Participants were chosen at the beginning of December by their band directors to be a part of the festival. Dr. James Colonna of Messiah College (high-school band) and Tim Gotwald (middle-school band) conducted the ensembles.
Next year’s festival will be held at McConnellsburg High School in McConnellsburg (which is the seat of Fulton County, immediately to the west of Mercersburg and Franklin County).
Also this past weekend, Sera Chang ’20(violin, Busan, South Korea) traveled to Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg January 10-12 to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s 2019 District 7 Orchestra. That concert took place Saturday, January 12, at 7 p.m.
