Exhibit by Artist Bruce Williams Opens January 11

“The Isolated Figure,” an exhibit by New York City-based professional artist Bruce Williams, opened at Mercersburg Friday, January 11. The show features a total of 29 pieces from Williams in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Cofrin Gallery and gallery niche. Williams will be on campus visiting classes and attending an artist reception at the exhibit on Friday, January 18 from 6:30-8 p.m.
In addition to being a professional artist, Williams monitors Saturday classes at Spring Studio, which is owned by Minerva Durham in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. He also works as a life model at several institutions around New York, as well as privately teaching drawing and anatomy.

Williams received his bachelor of arts degree in Fine Arts from Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado, and his master of science in computer science with a focus on computer graphics. Williams works in sculpture, drawing, and printmaking and has artistically captured the human body in many forms for a number of years. Williams’ sculptures have been landmarked by the City of New York and can be seen at 24 Bond Street; his work has also been mentioned in the New York Times and numerous blogs.

Mercersburg arts faculty member Sydney Caretti met Williams when he was a monitor at Spring Street Studio on her trips to New York with the school’s Studio Art class. Caretti, who has concentrated on the human form in both her graduate and undergraduate studies, said she was immediately aware of Williams’ astute understanding of the human figure and while informed by classical artists puts his own lilt in the way the figures twist and turn.

“Bruce’s drawings have a way of engaging you through sculptural volume and weighted form; since our first meeting it has been a dream of mine to have his work on display at Mercersburg,” Caretti said. “He is an incredibly well-versed artist.”

Students in Caretti’s Studio Art class met Williams while in New York City on Saturday, January 12, during a three-hour live drawing workshop.

Williams’ work will be on display through February 28. While on campus, he will also visit with Caretti's studio art class and drawing II classes as well as faculty member Nikki Walker’s anatomy class.
