The concert featured a variety of works — from ballet to hip-hop and tap and contemporary musical theatre piece and a contemporary Chinese piece.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Denise Dalton, director of dance and arts faculty at Mercersburg.
One of the pieces choreographed by Director of Dance Denise Dalton, Realm of Spirit, is set to a Gregorian Chant and Calling All Angels by Jane Siberry. The piece originally honored Dalton’s father when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dalton set it again after the passing of her mother and decided to revive the piece in honor of two of her colleagues who were diagnosed with cancer last spring, including staff member Marcia Galey (wife of faculty member and former School Minister Paul Galey), who recently passed away after a short battle with cancer.
“I wanted to do the piece again for those in our community who understand the formidable journey of cancer and let them know they’re not alone,” Dalton said.
Choreographers for the show included Dalton; Albert Quesada, the co-director of Mercersburg’s Summer Performing Arts Intensive (with his wife, Katie Vickers ’06); and part-time instructors Lisa Irvine, Nancy Cogan-Hershberger, Jennifer Nelson ’13, and Sean Alan Miller.
A number of student-choreographed pieces were on the bill. Student choreographers include Cherie Sio ’19, Anna Mele ’19, Vilma Sakkinen ’19, Maddie Dawson ’21, Sofie Pedersen ’19, Joie Xiao ’22, and Ella Jane Reinhard ’19.
