Springboard, MAPS Students Explore Research Topics

More than 90 seniors in Mercersburg Academy’s 12th-grade class enrolled in Springboard capstone courses participated October 24 in field excursions around the area and region pertaining to their fields of study. Some classes used the day to have uninterrupted time to work on projects on campus.

  • Maker's Lab, Rapid App Development, and MAPS SEARCH (which includes 31 students) spent the day on campus, getting a full day in the lab or doing research. (Dave Holzwarth ’78 teaches Maker’s Lab, Marcus Jaiclin teaches Rapid App Development, and Peter Kempe, Jay Bozzi, and David Bell work with MAPS.)
  • The Fight Against Disease, taught by Eric Hicks, visited the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
  • Positive Psychology, taught by Brett Potash, toured the Shambhala Meditation Center in Washington, D.C.
  • Write Your Novel, taught by John David Bennett, participated in a full-day writers’ retreat in Frederick, Md.
  • COMMARTS, taught by Kristen Pixler, visited the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
  • The Business of Sport, taught by Rick Hendrickson, visited three sports-related institutions in Franklin County: Keystone Country Store in Fort Loudon, Pa.; Buffalo Wild Wings in Chambersburg, Pa.; and Wilson College's Athletics Department, also in Chambersburg.
  • Entrepreneurship, taught by Todd McGuire, visited businesses in the Washington, D.C. area to learn about disruptive innovation.
"It's important for students in challenge-based classes to have large windows of dedicated time to visit, investigate, research, produce, and experience immersion and inquiry that might inspire them to their best possible work,” says Bennett, who serves as director of Springboard. “One day off campus or devoted to the lab or library, without the distractions and the stops-and-starts of a school day — although it's not a lot, maybe it can be enough to have some kids settle into their topics or issues or questions with even more curiosity and delight.
