Stony Batter Players’ "Stop Kiss" Held Over Two Weekends

Stony Batter Players, Mercersburg Academy’s student theatre company, opened its 2018-2019 season with Stop Kiss, a play that examines themes of friendship, love, attraction, prejudice, and hate. The sold-out opening performance was held September 29 as part of the school’s Family and Alumni Weekend, with three other performances October 5-7 in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Hale Studio Theatre. Director of Theatre Laurie Mufson directed the production.
The cast of Stop Kiss included Grace Bennett ’19 (Callie), Eliza DuBose ’20 (Sara), Chris Adams ’20 (George), Jay Howley ’21 (Peter), Lexy Shofer ’19 (Mrs. Winsley/Nurse), and Dylan Dowling ’22 (Detective Cole). H.P. Nguyen ’19 was the stage manager, Rachel Cruea ’21 was the dresser and deck crew, and Franklin Williams ’22 was the assistant stage manager.

Set in New York City in the 1990s, the play is a blend of comedy and romance and written by Philadelphia playwright Diana Son, whose credits include Satellites, BOY, R.A.W. ('Cause I'm a Woman), and The Moon Please. Stop Kiss was produced Off-Broadway in 1998 at The Public Theater in New York City.

Stop Kiss follows two women: Sara, who is a newcomer to New York, and her friend Callie, a traffic reporter and their evolving relationship as Sara adapts to the city and starts over after leaving her family and breaking up with her fiancé. Their story is told out of chronological order and throughout the play relationships are explored, formed, and ended.

Variety describes it as “A poignant and funny play about the ways, both sudden and slow, that lives can change irrevocably.”

The production featured set design by Kelly Dowling, lighting design by Walt Dowling, and sound design and technical support by Matt Bresler.
