Student-Athletes Heading to Army, Navy, Cornell, More

Ten more student-athletes in Mercersburg’s Class of 2017 have officially announced their college commitments. Members of the group represent eight different sports (boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, football, boys’ soccer, boys’ squash, boys’ swimming, girls’ swimming, girls’ tennis) and are heading to NCAA Division I and Division III institutions. The announcement brings to 20 the number of Mercersburg senior student-athletes who have chosen the destinations where they will continue their athletic careers.
Those announcing commitments May 1 include Jared Chulavatr ’17 (boys’ swimming, U.S. Military Academy at West Point/Army), Olivia Coleman ’17 (girls’ basketball, Stevenson University), Aaron Grant ’17 (football, McDaniel College), Andrew Gregory ’17 (boys’ soccer, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis/Navy), John Miller ’17 (boys’ basketball, Bard College), Samantha “Sami” Nassif ’17 (girls’ swimming, Navy), Dean Nguyen ’17 (boys’ swimming, Navy), Illia Presman ’17 (boys’ squash, Cornell University), Lindsay Tanner ’17 (girls’ swimming, Navy), and Molly Widdoes ’17 (girls’ tennis, Occidental College).

Jared Chulavatr

5’6”, Suwanee, Ga.
Placed second in the 100-yard butterfly at both the 2017 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships and the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Prep League Invitational… part of the Blue Storm’s fifth-place 200 medley relay quartet at Easterns… three-time Scholastic All-American (twice in the 100 fly and once in the 100 breaststroke) at Lambert High School, from which he graduated before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… member of the 2014–2015 USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team… coached at Mercersburg by Glenn Neufeld.

Olivia Coleman
girls’ basketball, Stevenson University
6’2”, center, Williamsport, Md.
First-team All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection… led the Blue Storm in scoring (11.3 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg), and blocked shots (2.5 bpg)… recorded six double-doubles in 2016–2017… the [Hagerstown] Herald-Mail Washington County Player of the Year and a second-team All-State selection in 2015–2016 at Williamsport High School, from which she graduated before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… played summer basketball for Lee Green and Frederick’s Finest… younger brother, Alonzo ’19, is a 10th grader at Mercersburg… coached at Mercersburg by Paul Sipes.

Aaron Grant
football, McDaniel College
5’10”, 175 lbs., wide receiver/kick returner, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Led Mercersburg in receptions (31), receiving yards (398), and touchdowns (five) in 2016… averaged 27 yards on kickoff returns… second-team All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection… rushed and passed for more than 1,000 yards at Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn, where he was an All-State and two-time All-City selection… graduated from Erasmus Hall before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… also a member of the Blue Storm’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams… won the 55-meter dash and the long jump at the 2017 Mercersburg Indoor Track & Field Invitational… a member of Mercersburg’s 4x100m and 4x400m (outdoor) relay teams, both of which ran at the prestigious Penn Relays in April… coached at Mercersburg by Dan Walker (football), David Grady (indoor track & field), and Nikki Walker (outdoor track & field).

Andrew Gregory
boys’ soccer, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy)
6’1”, center back, South Pasadena, Calif.
All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection… tallied five goals and three assists in 2016 for the Blue Storm… graduated from Capistrano Connections Academy in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… played club soccer for FC Golden State Academy… coached at Mercersburg by Carl Stensland.

John Miller
boys’ basketball, Bard College
5’11”, 165 lbs., guard, Holmdel, N.J.
Averaged 10.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 2016–2017… one of only three players to start every game of the Blue Storm’s competitive schedule… team co-captain… his 22-point effort in a win over Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy was his top single-game scoring performance of the year… graduated from Holmdel High School before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… coached at Mercersburg by Sean Crocker.

Sami Nassif
girls’ swimming, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy)
5’5”, Laguna Hills, Calif.
Finished third in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 500 free at the 2017 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships; also part of Easterns relay teams that placed second (200 free relay) and third (400 free relay)… won the 200 free and 500 free at the MAPL Invitational… graduated from Laguna Hills High School before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… competed at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Swimming Championships all four years at Laguna Hills (and advanced to the finals in three of four years)… state championship qualifier… swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Club, where she qualified for USA Swimming Sectionals and Futures meets… coached at Mercersburg by Glenn Neufeld.

Dean Nguyen
boys’ swimming, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy)
6’0”, Seattle, Wash.
Broke the Mercersburg school record in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.72) while placing second in the event at the 2017 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships… part of the Blue Storm’s fifth-place 200 medley relay team at Easterns… won the 100 breast and 200 freestyle at the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Invitational… earned Mercersburg’s Harrison S. Glancy Award as team’s most outstanding swimmer… 2016 Washington Class 3A state champion in 100 free; second in the state in the 50 free… attended Franklin High School in Seattle before coming to Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… coached at Mercersburg by Glenn Neufeld.

Illia Presman
boys’ squash, Cornell University
5’11”, San Diego, Calif.
Finished with a 22–0 record as a senior; one of just three players in Mercersburg boys’ squash history to go undefeated in a season… team co-captain… All-MAPL selection… won the “A” flight at the MAPL Championships… a native of Ukraine; former Ukraine junior champion… competed for the Ukranian junior team and ranked as high as No. 10 in Europe… played in the 2015 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships… a member of Mercersburg’s Cum Laude Society and a dormitory prefect… coached at Mercersburg by Chip Vink ’73.

Lindsay Tanner
girls’ swimming, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy)
5’10”, Silver Spring, Md.
Holds Mercersburg’s school record in the 100-yard freestyle (51.30)—a record that stood for 33 years and was previously held by Olympic gold medalist Betsy Mitchell ’83… led Mercersburg to a first-place finish at the 2016 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships and a second-place Easterns finish in 2017… two-time winner of the team’s Neidhoefer Swimming Award as most outstanding swimmer… team co-captain… swam for Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club (RMSC) and Connecticut Belair Swim Club… part of the RSMC 200 free relay quartet that holds the club record… served as a Peer Group Leader for younger students at Mercersburg… coached at Mercersburg by Glenn Neufeld and Pete Williams.

Molly Widdoes
girls’ tennis, Occidental College
5’9”, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Three-year All-MAPL and All-IPSL selection… earned team’s Most Outstanding Contributions Award as a senior and its Most Improved Player Award as an 11th grader… two-year team captain… won the No. 4 flight at the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championships… in 2015, helped Mercersburg to its best MAPL record in the program’s history (4–1)… also played varsity squash for two seasons… as a senior, served as a Peer Group Leader for younger students at Mercersburg… older brother, Reed ’15, is a Mercersburg graduate… coached at Mercersburg by Mike Sweeney (tennis) and Wells Gray (squash).
