Mercersburg Academy presented its fifth-annual Winter Student Dance Showcase February 22 in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre. The event featured student-choreographed work from a variety of styles, including hip-hop, modern/contemporary, and jazz.
Approximately 26 students performed in the showcase, including all students enrolled in this winter’s Dance Composition I course. Choreographers included seniors Anna Mele ’19, Rose Olsen ’19, Sofie Pedersen ’19, Cherie Sio ’19, Vilma Säkkinen ’19, and Andrea Yu ’19.
“The dancers are so talented every year, but this year’s group, led by the seniors and the captains, are so creative and clever—they’re exceptional and I’m blown away by their skill and choreography,” said Denise Dalton, who has served as Mercersburg’s director of dance since 2002.
The showcase included only student-choreographed pieces and is meant to be more informal as compared to the Fall and Spring Concerts. “It’s another venue to give the students in the PGA to have the opportunity to create dance work and try their hand at choreography,” Dalton said.
The event is also a chance for three-season athletes or others with an interest in dance to participate in the Winter Student Dance Showcase—as long as it’s an original piece, Dalton said. The showcase is also designed to be culturally inclusive and doesn’t include major costumes or lighting.
All pieces were auditioned in front of an adjudication board that included Dalton, dance captains Sio and Säkkinen, co-captains Ella Jane Reinhard ’19 and Mele, and board members Olsen, Jesse Broyles ’20, Lian Wang ’21, and Joie Xiao ’22.
The Spring Dance Concert is set for Saturday, May 11 (also in the Simon Theatre).
