Boys’/Girls’ V Basketball Teams Head to MAPL Tournament
Mercersburg’s boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams entered this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic Prep League Tournament as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in their respective brackets. The event, which is being held at Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., tipped off Friday, February 8, with the Blue Storm girls earning 48-45 win over the fifth-seeded Hun School of Princeton at 5 p.m., while the Storm boys fell to Lawrenceville, 57-52.
The Storm girls, under the leadership of Paul Sipes, earned their highest MAPL Tournament seed since 2016 (when Mercersburg advanced to the championship finals and would later win the Pennsylvania Independent Schools state title), while the Mercersburg boys (coached by Sean Crocker) are the No. 3 seed for the second-consecutive year.
Both Mercersburg squads finished with identical 2-3 conference records.
Back on January 12, the Blue Storm girls defeated Hun, 51-42, in Princeton. Maria Weimer ’19 (one of two seniors on the roster) tallied eight points, five steals, and four rebounds while handling most of the ball-handling duties and drawing Hun’s top player on defense.
By virtue of their win, the Storm girls will face top-seeded Blair Academy in a semifinal Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m.
The Storm boys draw Peddie in a consolation-round game at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, February 9.
