Residential Life

Adviser System

Living away from home can be a real challenge for teenagers—and for parents! So Mercersburg’s adviser system supports students in every area of daily life.

Each student is assigned a faculty adviser to whom they can turn for help with personal and academic issues. Each faculty adviser has a group of five to eight advisees who live in the same dormitory; advisers get to know the students well. This system ensures that each student has at least one adult who is watching out primarily for that student.

The adviser may not be the confidante of each advisee but will always keep an eye on the student and make sure that each advisee is connected to various aspects of the school—the people and the program. The adviser always encourages, advocates for, and supports advisees. Advisers are also available to talk with parents at any time—whether by e-mail, over the phone, or in person.

Adviser/advisee groups have lunch together on Thursdays and also meet at other times to discuss individual and school issues, including important residential-life topics. These times also used for the advisee group to plan extracurricular and community-service activities.
