Blue Review

Blue Review was originally founded as The Lit, a literary publication, in 1901. Its name changed in the 1980s, and shortly after, artwork was included in the annual publication for the first time. Fine arts faculty member Kristen Pixler and English faculty member Michele Poacelli serve as advisers to the student staff, which includes representatives for the writing sections and arts sections.

Blue Review is supported by the Fine Arts department, the Writing Center, and the English department. Students are encouraged to contribute through these departments, but all submissions are welcome.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association critiques Blue Review each year. The publication has steadily placed in the top two categories, receiving several Gold Crown and Silver Crown awards. The 2016 edition earned a Gold Medal in the CSPA’s annual review, and students Patrick Madden ’18 and Monk Phan ’16 received a Gold Circle Award for their cover design.

Students begin working on the publication in the fall, when they select a theme for that year’s edition and begin the process of filtering through submissions. The final product is released during the spring term.

Blue Review often includes a student interview with a noted speaker who has visited Mercersburg during the year; past interview subjects have included composer Philip Glass and poet Billy Collins.

Each year, a student is chosen to receive an award for best submission; in 2018, the award was shared by Sydney Hosbein ’18 and Patrick Madden ’18.
