Lloyd Aquatic Center

Construction is underway on Mercersburg Academy’s Lloyd Aquatic Center, which is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2019–2020 academic year.

The approximately 40,000 square-foot facility will include the Olympic-size 50-meter, 10-lane Furnary Pool with a diving well, in addition to locker rooms, seating for spectators, and office space. The aquatic center will be located directly east of the Nolde Gymnasium complex, and will be named for Board of Regents member Philip A. Lloyd ’65, his wife, Peggy, and their daughters, former Mercersburg swimmers and divers Kim ’90 and Bebe ’94.

The Furnary Pool is named in honor of Tony Furnary ’76, a leading cardiothoracic surgeon who was a standout swimmer and student at Mercersburg.

Excavation and construction work began on the site in February 2018, with a groundbreaking ceremony held in May 2018.

The facility will employ a system of movable bulkheads to allow for the transformation of a 50-meter pool into two separate 25-yard courses, giving swimmers the opportunity to train and compete at both short-course and long-course distances.

Bowie Gridley Architects of Washington, D.C. designed the aquatic center. The firm, of which Bill Gridley ’69 is a principal, also handled design for Mercersburg’s Hale Field House, Davenport Squash Center, Smoyer Tennis Center, the 2010 renovations to Nolde Gymnasium, and numerous other projects on campus.

Mercersburg’s 22 most recent Olympians have all been swimmers, including gold medalists Melvin Stewart ’88 (two golds/one bronze, 1992), Betsy Mitchell ’83 (one gold/two silvers, 1984 and 1988), and Rich Saeger ’82 (gold, 1984). Over the years, Mercersburg teams have captured dozens of Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships—most recently in 2016, when the Blue Storm girls won the competition.
“The aquatic center will allow Mercersburg to compete with the top programs in the country—and having a 50-meter pool allows for it to be used simultaneously by several groups of students for different uses. It will be a great facility for the school.”
—Phil Lloyd ’65

“Prior to attending Mercersburg, I had never thought about my ultimate potential. Mercersburg was a ‘meta moment’ where I took stock and really thought about my path. And that has made all the difference in my life.”
—Betsy Mitchell ’83, Olympic gold medalist
