Theatre

At Mercersburg, students find remarkable opportunities to express their theatrical talents—on stage, as well as behind the scenes.

Whether students are new to the theatre or have experienced productions before, our academic classes allow them to develop their technique and learn new skills.

Additionally, each year the Stony Batter Players present four major theatrical productions as part of the Academy PGA Program.  Founded in 1894, Stony Batter Players is the oldest continually active student group on campus and has a powerful tradition. Notable alumni  Academy Award winner Jimmy Stewart ’28 participated in Mercersburg theatre.

Current Stony Batter students contribute on stage and off to ensure that each production is the best it can be. Those who choose to focus on acting will also have a hands-on experience in technical theatre by assisting with sets, props, and costumes. Students who are primarily interested in working off stage through designing, building, and managing will find the state of the art technology in the Burgin theatres allows them to work at the highest level. They will also establish strong ensemble bonds with the performers by acting as the run crew backstage for each show. Students enrolled in the Springboard course Creative Collaboration perform an original piece they have created as their capstone project.

The 2018-19 Stony Batter Theatre Season includes:

Stop Kiss in the Hale Studio Theatre, directed by Laurie Mufson.

She Kills Monsters in the Simon Theatre, co-directed by Matt Maurer and Kelly Dowling.

Chicago: The High School Edition in the Simon Theatre, directed by Laurie Mufson with musical direction by Richard Rotz and vocal coaching by Jim Brinson.

Spring Scene Festival in the Hale Studio Theatre, directed by Laurie Mufson, Matt Maurer, and Kelly Dowling (This festival also provides an opportunity for students to direct and write scenes.)

Technical elements for this season's productions are designed by Kelly Dowling and supervised by Matt Bresler.
