< My Mercersburg Story

Newell Woodworth ’15

I knew I wanted to reach farther than the public school in Princeton, New Jersey. Even though Princeton High School is a really good school, I just wanted to see new things.

When I was looking at different schools, Mercersburg definitely caught my eye, because of the diverse community and the diverse opportunities here.

When you look at Mercersburg for the first time, it seems almost unfathomable. You can’t really imagine what it’s going to be like. But once you settle into the community, you realize that so many people are just like you, and you can really be accepted for who you are here. That’s the point when you realize Mercersburg doesn’t seem like this amazing boarding school anymore; it just feels like home.

Mercersburg emphasizes and is very proud of its diverse student body, which I really appreciate. I have made friends from China here that I may see this summer in China. I wouldn’t get that opportunity anywhere else.

Academically, Mercersburg was equal to the other schools I was looking at, but the campus here is definitely ahead of others. Not many boarding schools have a campus like this. In fact, not many colleges have a campus like this, so that definitely stuck out for me.

My favorite class right now is AP World History with Mr. Bell. He is just phenomenal—definitely the best teacher I’ve had here. He really cares about all the students, and it’s just great to be in his class.

I’ve found that most of the teachers really care about not only me as a student, but me as a person, and me as an athlete. They really get to see all aspects of you, and you actually become friends with them, which is an amazing thing. I’ve been able to form friendships with faculty here that I would not have had the opportunity to do otherwise.

When I think about Mercersburg, I think opportunity. It really fits my needs, because I couldn’t see myself being in a place where I’d be focusing on only one specific thing.

For example, I hope to play tennis in college, I want to major in either English or history, and I am interested in singing, as well as playing the piano. So there are a lot of different things that appeal to me. I can do all these at Mercersburg.
