< My Mercersburg Story

Lisa Grosser ’14

When I think of Mercersburg, the words “community,” “diversity,” “friendliness,” and “open-mindness” are at the top of my list.

I’m from Frankfurt, Germany. I remember the first time I came to Mercersburg. It was the first boarding school I visited. I felt really comfortable here—it felt like it was the school that I belonged to. During the time I was here the weather was really warm, and the campus was so beautiful. It wasn’t too crowded, but there were a lot of people around.
Before I came here I knew that I wanted to dance again. During my visit I met Ms. Dalton, the dance teacher, so I visited a class while I was here. I also knew I wanted to play a team sport, like field hockey, which also that helped me feel better about deciding to attend Mercersburg. I played field hockey when I was younger, but I stopped when I was 10, so I was excited that Mercersburg offered not only field hockey but also other team sports.
At Mercersburg, team sports help solidify a sense of community because your team changes every term, so you get to know new people—but for the season you’re with them, you get to know every teammate better. You also get to know people from different grades, which I really liked.
My brother went to a different boarding school in the States, so I knew how the relationships with the teachers would be, but I didn’t realize how close they actually would be and that you can always go to them and ask for help.
I like how close the Mercersburg community is. You definitely get to know a lot of new people, but after a while, you know everyone. Dorm life is a lot of fun. I like it a lot because it allows you to have your privacy when you need it, but you also have people around, which is great. You’re never alone, but you can be alone if you want to.
Most of the classes are so much more talkative than they would be if I were going to school in Germany; they are more like a big discussion between everyone. This year, I knew that my classes were going to be harder, but for right now, it’s going pretty well. I really started liking history class when I came here.
I think “Define Yourself. Here.” is a pretty good statement for this school; there are so many opportunities and different things you can do here, so I feel like everyone can do the things they want to or even try other things, and then in the end, you know what defines you as a person. You learn so much here, not only academically, but also character-wise. I think your personal growth is such a big part of growing up and learning as well.
Mercersburg Academy is a very good school. The campus is really pretty. Academically, it offers a wide range of classes including AP classes, in which you’re able to get to know your teacher. The people here are very nice, it's an open community where you meet so many people. Personally, I made connections and amazing friendships with kids from all around the world, including Brazil, Korea, and of course, America. It’s an experience for everyone and allows you to get used to a different type of lifestyle.
