< My Mercersburg Story

Kate Kistler ’15

My brother is in the 11th grade here, and I’m in the 10th. We both were attending a school last year in our hometown of Lansing, West Virginia, that was not great.

My parents started looking at boarding schools. It had to be relatively close, bigger in size, and co-ed. Mercersburg was the one that all of us liked the most. My parents are really happy about it, because they know they made the right decision by sending my brother and me here.

I thought living in a dorm would be really cool, but it’s just so much better, because all of your friends are right down the hall. And everything you need is there in the dorm. It’s better than home, because you’re with friends all day.

The classes here are definitely challenging—hard, but not impossible. Definitely quite a bit harder than my previous school, but that’s what I wanted. I like being challenged instead of just sitting in class. My favorite class is English, because I’m good at writing. But it’s a hard class that pushes me to do better,

You learn so much more here. The atmosphere here is unbelievable, because everyone is really focused and determined on what they are doing. But the atmosphere is not strict. We definitely work really hard, but Mercersburg makes it fun.

At my former school, I’d ask people for help, but they would just turn away—they weren’t interested helping anybody else. But here, if you ask someone, you know they are going do their best to help you. That’s how it is. All the teachers really want to help you; they want the best for you.

I really like being in the Burgin arts center. I have a bunch of classes there already, but in my free time, my friends and I will go there, play music, and hang out. I play guitar and piano, I sing, and I have a role in this year’s musical.

Soccer was my sport in the fall. I’ve played soccer a long time, but not as seriously as we play here at Mercersburg. Over one season I improved more than I have in the past few past years put together. I love my team and coaches. The whole team atmosphere is just great.

In the spring I want to do rock climbing. But if not that, then eventually some of the other programs with Mercersburg Outdoor Education, like Endeavor or the Adventure Series.
