About the Library

Lenfest Library
Lenfest Library is housed in Lenfest Hall, along with the History Department and College Counseling. The library’s primary mission is to support the curriculum, but the library is also interwoven into the fabric of the Mercersburg community and provides recreational services and materials as well. The library is able to support both the academic and recreational needs of the community at large by housing more than 45,000 volumes, over 100 subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, and journals, over two dozen Online Databases, and a collection of over 1,000 DVDs.

The librarians supply students, faculty and staff with timely, important information while encouraging them to become independent learners. This is proactively attained through bibliographic instruction and research support of the various classes, and the reference services offered throughout the day and during Evening Quiet Hours. The library’s main objective is to teach the skills that are important to information literacy during these bibliographic instruction sessions. Classes often come to the library so that they can subsequently use the library’s resources, or the librarians will travel to a class to provide the instructional services as needed, such as a lesson on citations or how to use a specific database or the Online Catalog.

Both the Rules and Regulations and Collection Development policies help govern how the library operates.  The Rules and Regulations outline the expectations for student behavior in the library during the academic day and evening study hours, and are enforced by members of the library staff.  The Collection Development policy guides the library’s selection and acquisition of new materials and helps to ensure that the library’s resources effectively support the curriculum of Mercersburg Academy.
