Binford’s first outing for the Naturals was a good one; he tossed seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out two to earn the win in a 7-3 win over visiting Frisco July 5 in Springdale, Ark.
In addition to his selection for the U.S. squad at the All-Star Futures Game (which features many of the game’s top prospects and will be played Sunday, July 13, at Target Field in Minneapolis), Binford has been a league All-Star in each of his two previous leagues: the Carolina League (2014) and the South Atlantic League (where he was chosen for the 2013 game as a representative of the Lexington Legends).
This season for Wilmington, Binford has a 5-4 overall record with a 2.40 earned-run average, which is third-best in the league. He is averaging a league-leading 10.02 strikeouts per nine innings and has allowed just 11 walks, good for a whopping 8.36 strikeout-per-walk ratio.
The Naturals are based in Springdale, Ark., near Fayetteville, and play their home games at 7,300-seat Arvest Ballpark. (Springdale is home to Tyson Foods, which produces more meat than any other company in the world.)
The 6-foot-6, 217-pound Binford, a righthanded pitcher and native of Hagerstown, Md., pitched twice in nearby Frederick this season as a member of the Blue Rocks, including an outing June 23 where he earned the victory in a 9-3 win. At Northwest Arkansas, he is now just two stops from the majors. He turned down a scholarship offer from the University of Virginia to sign with the Royals’ organization.
