Located in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania just a few miles north of the Maryland state line, the picturesque Borough of Mercersburg dates to 1780 and is home to approximately 1,500 people. The borough includes a historic district with structures from the 18th century, and surrounding areas figured prominently in the Civil War. The town is located in Franklin County among rolling hills and farmland.

Tuscarora Hiking Trail – 10 minutes
More than 250 miles in length, the trail traverses the Buchanan State Forest and rises from an elevation of 1,300 feet to 2,460 feet. It provides an interesting variety of scenic views and historic sites.

Hagerstown, MD – 30 minutes
Hagerstown offers the Maryland Symphony, Maryland Theatre, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and plenty of shopping and dining. It is also home of the Hagerstown Suns minor-league baseball team. 

Caledonia State Park, PA – 30 minutes
Caledonia provides swimming, golf, Appalachian Trail hiking, cross-country skiing, and the Totem Pole Playhouse (one of the few remaining summer stock theatres).

Sharpsburg, MD – 45 minutes
Antietam National Battlefield, site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, is located here.

Frederick, MD – 50 minutes
A fast-growing bedroom community of Washington, D.C., Frederick is rich in history and has a thriving downtown arts, retail, and food scene.

Shepherdstown, WV – 50 minutes
This home of Shepherd University has interesting shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as the Shepherdstown Opera House, which features live music and classic films.

Gettysburg, PA – 1 hour
Site of the Civil War’s most significant battle, the town of Gettysburg includes a visitor center, monuments, historical markers, national cemetery, and the Eisenhower Farm. Shops and restaurants line the downtown, which is also home to the Majestic Theater.

Harpers Ferry, WV – 1 hour
A national historic park, Harpers Ferry was the scene of John Brown’s Raid before the Civil War. The town, which was strategically placed above the Potomac, was traded between Union and Confederate forces throughout the war.

Hershey, PA – 1 hour 30 minutes
Home of Hershey Chocolate World and Hersheypark, the town of Hershey also offers entertainment venues that include the Giant Center, Hershey Theatre, and Hersheypark Stadium.

Baltimore, MD – 1 hour 45 minutes
Attractions in Baltimore include the Inner Harbor, National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, USS Constellation, and Hippodrome Theatre, as well as the Orioles and Ravens baseball and football teams. The city boasts many fine restaurants, including those in Little Italy and Fells Point.

Washington, D.C. – 1 hour 45 minutes
Washington includes the many museums of the Smithsonian Institution, as well as the nation’s capital sites—the White House, Capitol building, Supreme Court, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, and others. Washington is also home to world-class dining and shopping and teams from all four major professional sports.

Lancaster, PA – 2 hours
A major center for Amish culture, Lancaster features traditional farms, food and craft markets, roadside stands, and restaurants. Downtown Lancaster is home of Franklin & Marshall College and a vibrant arts and culinary scene, including the Fulton Theatre and a number of art galleries, while beyond the city lie entertainment options that include Dutch Wonderland and the American Music Theatre.
