Studio Art Class Visiting New York City

Students in Sydney Caretti’s Studio Art class traveled to New York City January 11-13 to experience the sights, sounds, cuisine and art of New York. This was the fifth year Caretti, an arts faculty member, has taken students on this trip.
The eight students (all upper-middlers), along with Caretti, began their visit at Ennead Architects, the firm that designed the Burgin Center for the Arts which opened on campus in 2006. Tim Hartung, management partner at Ennead Architects, is the parent of two Mercersburg Academy alums, Zander ’05 and Arcadia ’09. Students received a tour from Brian Masuda, an associate principal at the firm.

Students also visited galleries in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, toured the Whitney Museum of American Art, walked the High Line, saw a Broadway show, attended a performance-art exhibit and a music concert, and participated in a three-hour live figure drawing session at Spring Studio. The trip concluded on Sunday with a visit to the West 25th Street Flea Market in Hell’s Kitchen, which features vintage clothing and furniture, artisan jewelry, and much more.

During their weekend, students met Bruce Williams, with whom Caretti established a relationship when she began visiting Spring Street Studio. Williams’ work will be on display in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Cofrin Gallery January 11 through February 28; he will visit campus on January 18 for an artist’s reception from 6:30-8 p.m.

“This trip is a fabulous opportunity to open up new worlds of inspiration and exciting avenues for creativity,”  Caretti said. “Students return to campus ready to implement their own creative visions informed by their experience.”

Students enrolled in the class are all members of the 11th-grade class: Noah Choi ’20, Ryan Gu ’20, Birdy McDonnell ’20, Julee Rodgers ’20, Tom Wu ’20, Selina Xue ’20, Elizabeth Yang ’20, and Jesse Zhang ’20.
