Mercersburg Representatives Present at TABS Conference

Six Mercersburg Academy faculty members and Board of Regents Vice President Stacie Rice Lissette ’85 were featured presenters at The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) Annual Conference, which was held November 29 through December 1 at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C.
Lissette joined Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs Julia Stojak Maurer ’90 and Director of College Counseling Sally O’Rourke in giving a presentation titled “Implementing a Developmental College Counseling Program,” which examined the four-year college counseling model Mercersburg provides for all its students and how it helps build relationships with students and parents from the beginning of each student’s high-school career.

Director of Athletics Rick Hendrickson and School Minister Rev. Will Whitmore were featured as part of a panel on “Intentional Athletics: How to Bring Balance to Your Athletic Programs.” The session focused on how schools can utilize athletics as an integral part of the educational experience, and how athletics as a discipline can support development of skills such as self-awareness and responsibility, in addition to issues more traditionally associated with athletic competition (including winning/losing with dignity and teamwork). Hendrickson and Whitmore were joined by panelists from Blue Ridge School, Virginia Episcopal School, and The Masters School.

Assistant Head of School for Enrollment Quentin McDowell contributed to a pair of sessions. One was with Tommy Adams (who is now the head of school at Grosse Pointe Academy in Michigan and previously served as Mercersburg’s assistant head for enrollment): a TABS-centric extension of the Erdmann Institute—a program held each summer that supports experienced mid-career and senior admission professionals in their efforts to build enrollment success. The second, titled “Internal Motivation: Engaging and Educating Your Faculty,” addressed how schools’ external offices (including admission and advancement) can work together with their faculty and staff to build sustainable futures. In the second session, McDowell was joined by colleagues from fellow Mid-Atlantic Prep League institutions Blair Academy and Peddie School.

Head of School Katie Titus, who was a member of the TABS conference planning committee, served as a panelist in the Heads Forum alongside fellow leaders from The Masters School, The Thacher School, and Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.

In addition to the aforementioned presenters, seven additional members of the Mercersburg faculty attended the conference, which was held less than 100 miles from the Academy campus.
