Summer Reading Essay Winners Announced

One essay written by a student from each of Mercersburg’s four academic classes has been chosen as a winner of the school’s Summer Reading Essay Contest. This year’s honorees are Alison Huang ’22 (of Taichung City, Taiwan), Marco Malo ’21 (of North Bergen, N.J.), Maggie Quick ’20 (of Denton, Md.), and Katie Brennan ’19 (of Wheaton, Ill.).

All students (and faculty) were required to read one of three books (Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle, I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez, or The Far Away Brothers by Lauren Markham); students were also asked to read a specific book depending on their English course this year.

During the first week of classes, students wrote from the prompt connected to the book they read over the summer. English teachers then selected a "best in class" to compete in the school-wide contest. Essays were grouped by grade and judged anonymously by faculty from a number of academic departments and the library, as well as Head of School Katie Titus and Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs Julia Stojak Maurer ’90. Winners were announced in October.

Students submitted an essay in response to a single prompt. One essay from each English class rotation was selected as the representative from that section, and a group of faculty judges then chose a single essay from each academic class (with the names of the student authors removed). The winning students each received a $100 cash prize and a letter of commendation. Winner’s names are also inscribed on a Summer Reading Essay Winner Plaque that hangs on the wall of the Writing Center in Irvine Hall.

Boyle and Sánchez will visit campus to address the community later this academic year; Boyle will give Mercersburg’s Schaff Lecture on Ethics and Morals December 10, while Sánchez will speak April 19, 2019. Markham will visit campus and speak at the school meeting on April 26.
