Nancy Horton Heefner Memorial Art Show on Exhibit in Burgin Center

The 13th Annual Nancy Horton Heefner Memorial Art Show will be on exhibit in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Cofrin Gallery August 29–September 21. It is a non-juried show and is sponsored by the Mercersburg Historical Society. A reception will be held Sunday, September 9, from 1–4 p.m.
The show includes more than 60 works from artists from Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania and Washington County in Maryland. Sydney Caretti (a fine-arts faculty member and the Academy’s director of galleries) is the curator of the show, which is open to the public during hours the Burgin Center is in operation.
The public is invited to view the show; visitors should contact the Office of Campus Safety using instructions at the front door to be admitted to the building. The Burgin Center for the Arts is open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
“Year after year, the breadth of visual variety and depth of talent amazes me,” Caretti says. “I like to think that Nancy Heefner would be tickled by the outpouring of engagement in the art community that reaches across the counties. Inspired by Nancy Horton Heefner, it is the Mercersburg Historical Society, Mr. [Tom] Heefner [’57], contributing artists, and art lovers that make this show possible. It's a delight to display this exhibit and being afforded the opportunity to meet new artists, visit with returning artists, and continue making and maintaining connections and friendships.”
Some of the artists featured in this year’s show include Jeff Barnhart (Autumn Reflections, oil), Carolyn Chase (Teapot, pottery), Virginia Hair (Floral, oil), Cathleen Kwolek (Sullivan’s Mill, watercolor), Mariann Martin (Cold Spire, photography), Johan Neal Mullican (Refugees in Their Own Land, acrylic on canvas), and Stephen Wright (Untitled, stoneware).
Heefner, a teacher, artist, and author, taught art history, drawing, and ceramics at Mercersburg for 22 years and was head of the art department for seven years, retiring in 1994. She attended McConnellsburg High School and graduated from Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, Va. Heefner earned a degree in fine arts from Wilson College and did postgraduate work at Alfred University in New York and San Francisco State University.

Her husband, Tom ’57, is a Mercersburg Academy alumnus and a member of the school’s Alumni Council.
