Baltimore Orioles Draft/Sign Jayvien Sandridge ’18

Lee Owen
Jayvien Sandridge ’18 was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles June 6 in the 32nd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Sandridge was a varsity baseball letterwinner all three years at Mercersburg, and helped the Blue Storm to three Mid-Atlantic Prep League titles (the team has won or shared the league crown in each of the past eight seasons).
Sandridge, a 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound left-handed pitcher from Hagerstown, Md., went 7-0 with an 0.97 earned-run average on the mound for the Storm this year, striking out 70 hitters and allowing just six earned runs in 43.1 innings of work. He signed a national letter of intent with the University of Central Florida in April, but signed with the Orioles and played this summer with the team's Gulf Coast League rookie-level team, the GCL Orioles, who are based in Sarasota, Fla.

Sandridge compiled a 3-0 record with a 2.00 earned-run average in 15 appearances in his first professional season.

He was the first Mercersburg baseball player to be drafted since Christian Binford ’11 was chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the 30th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. (Binford, ironically enough, is also in the Orioles’ farm system; he pitches for the Class AA Bowie Baysox.) Fellow Mercersburg alumnus and former MLB draftee Josh Edgin ’06, who has 177 career major-league appearances as a relief pitcher, is playing for the Class AAA Syracuse Chiefs, who are the top minor-league affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
