Senior Athletes Announce College Commitments on National Signing Day

Nine student-athletes in Mercersburg’s Class of 2017 revealed their college destinations for the next four years on Wednesday, February 1, which is colloquially known as “National Signing Day.” The group includes athletes in boys’ lacrosse, boys’ soccer, and girls’ swimming. Members are headed to colleges or universities in six different American states, the District of Columbia, and even a Canadian province (Quebec).
Those announcing commitments February 1 include Gnim Bazim ’17 (boys’ soccer, Kenyon College), James DiLalla ’17 (boys’ lacrosse, Union College), Barbara Fitzsimmons ’17 (girls’ swimming, Swarthmore College), Lance Lysiak ’17 (boys’ soccer, Muhlenberg College), Ethan Malcom ’17 (boys’ lacrosse, Bishop’s University [Quebec]), Nick Nelson ’17 (boys’ lacrosse, Washington and Lee University), Danielle Pong ’17 (girls’ swimming, American University), Christian Recker ’17 (boys’ soccer, McDaniel College), and Nick Schulkin ’17 (boys’ lacrosse, Colorado College).

boys’ soccer, Kenyon College
5-11, 172 lbs., defender, Bronx, N.Y.

All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League and All-Independent-Parochial School League selection as a senior… Academic All-MAPL selection… two-year team captain (one year at Mercersburg and one at the High School for Health Professions and Human Services in New York, N.Y.)… three-year captain of his club team, South Bronx United… also a member of Mercersburg’s wrestling and track & field teams… serves as a dormitory prefect and a Blue Key (tour guide).

James DiLalla
boys’ lacrosse, Union College
6-1, 165 lbs., midfield, Hanover, N.H.

Has also competed for Mercersburg’s varsity football and track & field teams, and played basketball and soccer… played club lacrosse for New England Catamounts… older brother, Aric ’12, graduated from the Academy and works for the Denver Broncos; younger sister, Mary ’19, currently attends Mercersburg.

Barbara Fitzsimmons
girls’ swimming, Swarthmore College
5-5, Williamsport, Md.

Team captain as a senior… part of the Blue Storm’s 2016 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship team (which was the girls’ team’s first win at the vaunted meet since 1987)… dormitory prefect… serves as an editor of Blue Review literary magazine and as a Blue Key… has also played lacrosse… younger brother, Dalton ’20, also attends Mercersburg.

Lance Lysiak
boys’ soccer, Muhlenberg College
6-3, 170 lbs., goalkeeper, Mountain Top, Pa.

Three-year team captain (one year at Mercersburg and two years at Crestwood High School in Mountain Top, Pa.)… 2016 All-MAPL and All-IPSL selection… two-time All-Wyoming Valley Conference first-team All-Star… earned team most valuable player honors in 2016 (when he posted six shutouts in goal)… graduated from Crestwood High School before attending Mercersburg as a postgraduate student… played club soccer for Lehigh Valley United… also played varsity basketball and lacrosse.

Ethan Malcom
boys’ lacrosse, Bishop’s University
5-9, 180 lbs., defense, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Played for Team Nova Scotia at 2015 and 2016 Canadian Field Lacrosse Championships… a member of Prince Edward Island’s provincial hockey and soccer teams… played club lacrosse for the Nova Scotia Shamrocks… dormitory prefect… has also competed in soccer and indoor track & field at Mercersburg… attended Charlottetown Rural High School before coming to Mercersburg as an 11th-grade student.

Nick Nelson
boys’ lacrosse, Washington and Lee University
5-9, 162 lbs., midfield, Hagerstown, Md.

Team captain… All-IPSL and All-Metro-Independent Lacrosse League selection… 2016 Mercersburg team most valuable player… Inside Lacrosse Recruiting Invitational All-Star… played club lacrosse for Baltimore Breakers and Blackwolf (D.C.) Lacrosse… has also been a member of Mercersburg’s varsity football and indoor track & field teams… serves as sports editor of Mercersburg News… attended Saint James School in Hagerstown before enrolling at Mercersburg as a 10th-grade student.

Danielle Pong
girls’ swimming, American University
5-3, Chambersburg, Pa.

Helped Mercersburg’s 2016 girls’ swimmers to a first-place finish at the prestigious Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships... part of a quartet that holds the school record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.83)… placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and second as a member of the 200 medley relay team… swam for the Chambersburg Chargers club team… has competed at YMCA National meets in North Carolina and Indiana.

Christian Recker
boys’ soccer, McDaniel College
5-10, 180 lbs., midfielder/forward, Chambersburg, Pa.

Captained the Harrisburg City Islanders club team… earned second-team All-Conference and co-offensive player of the year honors at James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, where he attended for two years before enrolling at the Academy as an 11th grader… has also competed for Mercersburg’s varsity wrestling and outdoor track & field teams… also involved with the South Central Pennsylvania Soccer Academy.

Nick Schulkin
boys’ lacrosse, Colorado College
5-9, 160 lbs., attack, San Rafael, Calif.

Two-time All-MAPL and All-IPSL selection… as an 11th grader, led team in goals (70), assists (31), and points (101)… played for Team Israel at the 2016 U-19 World Lacrosse Championships, where he led the tournament in points (38) and was named to the Federation of International Lacrosse) Presidents Team at the event… also led Mercersburg in scoring in 2015… played club lacrosse for the Alcatraz Outlaws… a member of Mercersburg’s varsity squash team and has also played football and soccer at Mercersburg.


In November, Tom Cremins ’17 signed a national letter of intent in November to play lacrosse at Holy Cross; he was the first student-athlete in the Class of 2017 to announce a commitment. Additional Mercersburg student athletes will announce commitments later this academic year.
