Mercersburg Receives CASE Educational Fundraising Award

Mercersburg Academy is one of just eight independent schools honored this year with a 2019 CASE Educational Fundraising Award, which is presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
The Educational Fundraising Award annually recognizes exemplary development programs based on a blind review of data. A group of experienced educational fundraisers pores over the data to determine the award recipients. It marks Mercersburg’s second such award in a four-year span; the school’s Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations was previously recognized in 2016.

“It is both humbling and affirming for our school to receive this distinguished recognition from CASE,” says Quentin McDowell, associate head of school for external relations. “This award is not only a reflection of the tireless daily work of the wonderful people here at Mercersburg, but it is also a tremendous tribute to our community of alumni, parents, friends, and volunteers who choose to support the school so fully.”

Mercersburg was the lone independent school to be honored in the category of institutions with endowments between $250 million and $350 million, and the only one in CASE’s District II, which includes the largest number of independent schools in any district and covers institutions located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and New York state, as well as portions of Canada and the Caribbean. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the school (and careful management of the endowment by the school’s Board of Regents), Mercersburg’s endowment stands at approximately $295 million (as of June 30, 2018).

Other independent schools receiving CASE awards included The Gunnery School, Tabor Academy, The Webb Schools, Madeira School, Montgomery Bell Academy, Thacher School, and Phillips Academy Andover.

“The financial sustainability of independent-school education depends on highly productive and efficient advancement programs,” the CASE judges wrote in a statement. “Fundraising success is measured by many variables, not only by which schools raise the most money… Again this year we recognize schools that showed not just measurable growth in dollars raised, but also breadth and depth in terms of diversity of sources from which funds were raised.”

“Among the trends we noticed in this year’s judging was a general increase in total support from parents and alumni across all categories. We were especially pleased to see what we believe is a maturing of sustained and ongoing major-gift fundraising.”
