Riley Wick ’20 Receives Scholarship to Youth Ballet Program
Riley Wick ’20, of Haymarket, Va., will begin her five weeks at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Summer Ballet Program at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., next week after she returns from the school’s break travel trip to Italy. Wick received a full-tuition scholarship to the program after her application and performance samples were submitted by Denise Dalton, Mercersburg’s director of dance.
Wick, a rising senior at Mercersburg Academy, has been involved with the dance program for the past two years and has been dancing since she was 3 years old.
“She started when she was 3 and hasn’t stopped,” said Kelly Wick, Wick’s mother.
Wick attended the Regional High School Dance Festival in the spring and has an interest in pursuing a professional career as a dancer.
The program, which runs June 22-July 27, provides technical training for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students at the internationally recognized school of classical ballet.
"Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet's 5-Week Summer Ballet Program is a nationally and internationally recognized school of classical ballet, providing not only complete ballet training but also the environment where Riley can confirm if her love of ballet is enough to pursue a career as a dancer,” said Dalton. “It takes more than being technically strong. One must also possess passion, motivation, and immense mental strength. CPYB will help her learn if this is, indeed, the path in which she wants to proceed.”
Participants will learn from world-class faculty, led by Marcia Dale Weary, founding artistic director. Instructors include CPYB academic year faculty, CPYB alumni, current and former professional dancers, and choreographers.
CPYB’s curriculum, developed by Weary, focuses on fundamental technique and foundations of classical ballet, and 16 ballet classes are offered each week.
“Denise’s love and support has made this year a huge success for Riley,” Kelly Wick said. “She’s so excited, and we’re really proud of her success. We’re thankful to Denise for everything she’s done and the opportunities the school has given Riley this year.”
