Michael Conklin Appointed Director of College Counseling

Michael Conklin has been named Mercersburg Academy’s director of college counseling, effective July 1. Conklin is currently an associate director in the Office of College Counseling, a position he has held since 2015.
Conklin first joined Mercersburg Academy as an associate director of admission and financial aid in 2011. In his new position, he succeeds Sally O’Rourke, who has been the director of college counseling since 2014-2015.

“The recent growth of our College Counseling program has helped us to better support our students and their families through what is a complex and often challenging process,” says Conklin. “I am excited to continue working with students and their families as they engage in the process and prepare for their transition to college in ways that are healthy and rewarding.”

Conklin will lead a team of six college counselors and two other staff members. The department has grown in recent years as Mercersburg has transitioned to a developmental model where every student is paired with a college counselor during their year of entry to the school. (Most recently, the Class of 2019 received admission offers from 239 colleges and universities and will matriculate to 86 different institutions this fall.)

A native of Syracuse, New York, Conklin graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a bachelor’s degree in English and public policy and a minor in education. Prior to Mercersburg, he worked as an admission officer at the University of Rochester.

Mike has served as the head boys’ varsity lacrosse coach at Mercersburg, an upper-middler grade dean, and a dorm faculty member in Main Hall. He and his wife, Cally, live on campus with their daughter, Elise, and son, Benjamin.
